Traditionally yard sales are held in the warmer months, not this time with CARITAS. It was December and this was designated a holiday yard sale. The CARITAS Furniture Bank was the place where people could experience the joy of the season while shopping for large items such as bookcases, appliances, TVs and decorations for the home and of course all the Christmas accent pieces you could imagine. The less than balmy temperatures on the outside as well as on the inside did not stop eager visitors from shopping from around 8:00 AM until well after 2:00 PM.
There was a steady flow of people coming in who experienced the taste of hot apple cider and sugar cookies. The treats were intentional to extend our family atmosphere to the surrounding community. This helped put guests in the Christmas spirit as they made decisions on what special gifts to buy. Shoppers came from various places and could purchase items for as little as 25 cents.
The holiday yard sale netted slightly over $1300 and was deemed a success. Volunteers from Dominion Power and regular CARITAS volunteers worked tirelessly for weeks getting everything ready by organizing, straightening and pricing. In addition, CARITAS staff gave of their time and efforts to make the holiday yard sale not only an event for the public but an event to be shared and enjoyed by everyone.
