Angela Middleton, M.D., her husband Ryan Mitchell, and their four children view philanthropy as more than charitable giving. It’s a deeply held family value and a long-term investment in the health and strength of the Richmond community. Through the Mitchell Family Foundation, Angie and Ryan have built a multi-decade initiative that both supports the local community and works to build awareness for other families desiring to impact Richmond in a positive manner. Their vision is to improve the quality of life for those less fortunate and underserved by society, and the ultimate goal is to transition leadership of the Foundation to the next generation when that time comes.

The Foundation’s support of CARITAS reflects this commitment. “We view CARITAS as an investment in the Richmond community. Homelessness and addiction are experienced most acutely individually. However, inarguably, structural elements of society contribute to these challenges. CARITAS provides a pathway from recovery to hope. Lives are uplifted and transformed on a daily basis.”

In 2025, the Mitchell Family Foundation made a transformative multi-year commitment to CARITAS, ensuring sustained support for vital programs that meet basic needs, support recovery, and promote long-term stability. “We believe that in a society as wealthy as ours, we have a moral duty to help the less fortunate. It is easy, and in many ways natural, to be blind to the pain and suffering of others. Through the support of, and involvement with, organizations such as CARITAS, we hope our children will have a better appreciation for the reality of the world and ultimately have a richer life experience.”

Clara Stokes, Chief Advancement Officer, reflects on the impact of this support: “This gift is helping us not only sustain, but grow the programs that provide hope and stability to our community. It reminds us that the power to make a lasting difference lies right here in Richmond, in the hearts and actions of our neighbors.”

That next generation is already getting involved. Through hands-on experiences, including volunteering with CARITAS programs, Angie and Ryan’s children are learning that meaningful change begins with compassion and action. It’s all part of the family’s broader goal to build a lasting culture of philanthropy that endures across generations.
