AmeriCorps is a network of service programs offering the opportunity for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to serve and meet community needs. Members address the most critical problems in the areas of education, economic opportunity, veteran and military family services, health, the environment, and disaster services. In exchange for a specified term of service, AmeriCorps members earn a living allowance as well as an educational award to pay back qualified student loans or to finance college, graduate school or vocational training.

Members enrolled in our program serve in the Richmond area connecting individuals experiencing homelessness to community resources; providing essential furniture and household items for adults and families moving from shelter to permanent housing; mentoring men moving through our recovery program; and, providing an intensive job-readiness program that will assist individuals with obtaining employment. CARITAS has been involved with the AmeriCorps program since 2008 as a placement site and as a grantee since 2013. CARITAS is committed to assisting economically disadvantaged people through its core programs and takes advantage of the AmeriCorps program to provide opportunities for experiential training for our program graduates. Since becoming a grantee CARITAS has recruited 37 National Service members that were economically disadvantaged of which 27 completed their contract. Approximately 59% gained employment during or after service as a result of their experience as a National Service member.
